Sargent Slaughters Minis, Rain Ends Night Early

by Darin Racek

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. -- Mother Nature was prominent at Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte on May 31, as rain fell shortly before the start of the night, prompting a 45 minute late start. She then poured more rain on the track before the IMCA Stock Car A Feature, calling for an early end of the night. The three IMCA A Features will be run before the regular show on June 7. June 7 is a makeup date for the May 10 rainout. The gates open at 5 PM, and the races will start at 7 PM.

The Mini Sprint class was the only division to get their A Feature run. John Webster of North Platte paced much of the early race. Eric Sargent of North Platte,
driving the car that Josh Herbst was to run a couple of weeks ago, started near the back and found his way to the front of the pack on lap six. He had a good lead on Webster at the finish. Heat race winner Cory Kelley of North Platte took third place, while newcomer Dalten Collins of North Platte and Arden Myers of North Platte rounded out the top five.

The IMCA Modified B Feature was won by cash dash winner Jeremy Herbst of North Platte. The win helped him qualify to run the A Feature that will be run on June 7. Joining him in the A Feature will be the drivers that qualified for the event via the heat races, plus Jay Steffens of North Platte, Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg, Kyle Clough of Wallace, Luke Frosh of Ogallala, and Dave Pederson of Brady. The three big IMCA heat races were won by Charley Brown of Maxwell, and McCook drivers Don Hagan, Jr. and Ronnie Wallace.

Charley Brown doubled up on heat race wins, as he also won a heat in the IMCA Stock Car class. Shane Stout of North Platte and Casey Werkmeister of Maywood also joined him in wins. The B Feature was won by May 17th A Feature winner Zach Schultz of North Platte. Stew Holmes of North Platte, Branden Eilts of Grand Island, Travis Demilt of Ogallala, and Brent Gibson of Ogallala rounded out the top five.

The IMCA Hobby Stock class saw racers from as far away as Kearney, Benkelman, and Holyoke, Colo. Two of those towns were represented in heat race wins, as Jack Sherman of Kearney and Austin Davis of Benkelman took those wins.

Big Crowd Watches Opening Night at Lincoln County Raceway

by Darin Racek

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. -- The much anticipated opening night finally arrived at Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte May 17. Cars from four states were in the pits to put on a show for the big crowd in the grandstand. Ronnie Wallace of McCook, Zach Schultz and Cory Kelley of North Platte, Austin Davis of Benkelman, and Scott Naggatz of Carter Lake, Iowa were the five drivers who were able to take the big A Feature wins for their respective classes.

During the first few laps of the IMCA Modified A Feature, it looked as though all eighteen starters wanted to win the race on the opening lap. Jay Steffens of North Platte was out in front of the action early, but a couple of cautions kept everyone close. Ronnie Wallace eventually worked his way into second place, keeping close tabs on Steffens out front, and waiting for any opportunity to advance. Around the half way point, Steffens pushed going through corners three and four, opening the door for Wallace to sneak underneath and take the lead. Even with two cautions during the last two laps, no one was able to deny Wallace his 120th career IMCA Modified win. Steffens held off North Platte racer Jim Mlady for second place. The top five was rounded out by Dan Carl of North Platte and John Huffman of McCook. The B Feature was won by Charley Brown of Maxwell. The three heat races were won by Wallace, Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte, and John Huffman of McCook.

Charley Brown also drove an IMCA Stock
Car for the night, and paced much of that class’s main event. The raced was slowed by only one caution after a hub broke on Shane Stout’s start, making it unable for the North Platte driver to get back to the pits. Zach Schultz began looking for ways around Brown in the second half of the race, and with three laps to go, made the winning pass. Brown remained in second place, ahead of Mikey Dancer, Travis Tilford, and B Feature winner Todd Chrisman, all of North Platte. Charley Brown, Colton Osborn of Cozad, and Casey Werkmeister of Maywood were also IMCA Stock Car heat race winners.

Austin Davis doubled his pleasure in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. After winning the heat race, the Benkelman driver started in row two of the main event. He quickly jumped out to a lead, and by the end of the race, had a straightaway advantage on second place finisher Corey Cruzan of Maxwell. Miles White of North Platte finished in third place. North Platte drivers Rick Eller and Dan Morash rounded out the top five.

The Mini-Sprints were introduced to a new track for them. The new track has been stretched out to ¼ mile, and uses corners three and four of the big track. Corey Kelly seemed to enjoy the new layout, as he whipped the field in both the heat race and A Feature. Arden Myers of North Platte finished in second place. J. R. Way of Lexington made it in time for races after watching his daughter Laura graduate college in Hays, Ks. earlier in the afternoon , and finished in third place. John Webster of North Platte and Tony Linner of Kearney finished in fourth and fifth places.

An additional class was added for the night. The Colorado Mod Lite Association and Outlaw Vintage Lites of Eastern Nebraska merged at Lincoln County Raceway for a twenty car field. Scott Naggatz earned a victory for the eastern series, as he took the win in the sixteen car A Feature. Brad Bayne of Ault, Colo. and Stephen Beckham of Fort Collins, Colo. were the top drivers from the west, as they completed the feature in second and third places. Taylor Pollock of Prague took home fourth place, and Duane Bayne of Nunn, Colo. finished in fifth place. The Mod Lite heat races were won by Naggatz, Travis Bayne of Windsor, Colo., and Bryan Herrick of Curtis.

After taking a week off, Lincoln County Raceway will be back in business on Saturday night, May 31. The gates will open at 5 PM, and the races will start at 7 PM, Central Time. Although it was not announced, there will be racing on June 7th at Lincoln County Raceway, to make up for the May 10 rainout.

Thiem, McCarty, Herbst Win During Short Night at Lincoln County Raceway

Dash for Cash Winner Josh Sabin of
North Platte with Jr. Race Fan of the Week Logan Schmedeke of North Platte

Racing resumed at Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte on July 14, but was cut short when a couple of circuit breakers that control the lighting in corners one and two malfunctioned. Because of the dangerous situation for the drivers, the races were called two races short of being complete. The IMCA Modified A Feature and the IMCA Stock Car A Feature that were not run will be run on Saturday night, August 11, before a complete show that night. There were no rain checks issued, as the situation fell under the “completed show“ portion of the track‘s rainout (and unforeseen circumstance) policy. Three A Features were completed, and they were won by Derek Thiem of Columbus, Kenny McCarty of Rogers, Ark., and Jeremy Herbst of North Platte.

The night was also a night to remember Brady Koch, an IMCA Stock Car driver from Cambridge who was killed in a highway accident on Wednesday. At intermission, Lincoln County Raceway had an auction to raise money for a memorial. The drivers also passed the helmets around for donations. Between the two activities, the track raised about ten dollars short of $2,400.00. Brady Koch’s funeral will be on Monday, July 16, at the McCook Christian Church in McCook at 10 AM.

As the sun was going down, and corner one was going dark, the IMCA Hobby Stocks worked hard to get their A Feature in. Michael Woodhead of Holyoke, Colo. paced the first half of the race. As he came around to complete the half way point, Derek Thiem got by and crossed the scoring line ahead of him by less than a car length. A caution came out on the following lap, aligning the two with Thiem in front of Woodhead. The two later got together with four laps to go, after the caution light came on for debris. Woodhead took his car to the pits. Aaron Koch of Cambridge, Brady’s brother, inherited second place, and fought hard to get a win for his brother and himself, but came up about two car lengths short at the finish line. Austin Davis of Benkelman took third place. Shane Klockman of Ogallala finished in fourth. Miles Davis of North Platte was fifth, as the car in front of him was a lap down. Klockman and Davis were the heat race winners.

Kenny McCarty likes to come back to North Platte to race a Late Model, and he likes it even more when he hits the setup. On Saturday night, the car was right, and Kenny was fast, sweeping both the Late Model heat race and A Feature. Shane Lewis of North Platte finished the race in second place, while Charley Brown of Maxwell took third. Chad Whipple of North Platte had an exciting run in the heat race, working his way to second place, but a spin in the feature relegated him to fourth place.

Josh Sabin of North Platte probably made the most money in the Mini-Sprints that night, but Jeremy Herbst had the most wins. Herbst took the heat win and Sabin was able to win the cash dash. Arden Myers of McCook led the feature early and tried to make it three winners in three races. Sabin was working to pass Myers when he bounced into the dirt burm and into Herbst. Sabin went to the back, and Herbst used the restart to sneak by Myers and ride away with the A Feature win. Sabin came back to finish in third place, ahead of J. R. Way of Lexington and John Webster of North Platte.

Three IMCA Modified Heat races and a B Feature were completed before the races were stopped for the night. Three Lincoln County drivers swept the heat race wins, with North Platte drivers Dan Carl and Jim Mlady and Brady driver Dave Pedersen taking those wins. Point leader David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan. made an unusual visit to the B Feature, yet found his way to victory, ahead of Jeremy Frenier of Fort Collins, Colo. and North Platte’s Brad Turner.

The IMCA Stock Cars only got three races in, the three heat races. Despite that, those races were all very exciting, and they were swept by North Platte drivers. Zach Schultz worked his way by Colton Osborn of Cozad to win the first one. Todd Chrisman had the lead of heat two, but on the last lap, Mikey Dancer danced by to garner the win. Heat three was a four car battle to the end, and somehow Travis Tilford found a way to get ahead of Shane Stout of North Platte, Buddy Brown of Tryon, and Scotty White of North Platte.

The next races at Lincoln County Raceway will be the Sandhills Shootout on July 20 - 21. The next regular night of racing will be on Saturday, August 11, with the unfinished portion of the July 14 show to be run that night.

Murray, Chrisman, Klockman, Herbst Hit Jackpot at Lincoln County Raceway

by Darin Racek

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. -- Races were held on July 7 at Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte, and many people thought the luck was with them on this seventh day of the seventh month of the year ‘07. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., Todd Chrisman and Jeremy Herbst of North Platte, and Shane Klockman of Ogallala were the ones that hit the jackpot that night.

The IMCA Modified A Feature had a scary scene on lap four of the race. D. J. Pedersen of Brady shot his car off of corner one and rolled one-and-a-half times. He did everything he had to do to avoid injury and did so. Robby Haines of Benkelman was leading at the time, earning the lead using both the low and high lines to get there. David Murray, Jr. was also using various lines to work his way forward, and on lap nine, got by Haines. He stayed out in front for his fourth Lincoln County Raceway win of the year and his 20th IMCA Modified Feature win this year, in what he thinks has been 35 starts. Haines held onto second place. On the last lap, Andrew Dillenburg snuck around fellow North Platte driver Ronnie Wallace for third place. Jeremy Herbst rounded out the top five. Haines, Murray, and Herbst were heat race winners. Murray also won the cash dash.

Jeremy Herbst did double duty, running his Mini Sprint as well as a Modified. The Mini Sprints had a terrible time getting started, as it took four times to get one lap in. Fortunately, fourth time was a charm, and they finished the race without another stoppage. Herbst started on the front row alongside J. R. Way of Lexington and disappeared when the race finally started. Josh Sabin of North Platte worked his way into second place, but ran out of time to catch Herbst, who was also the heat race winner. Way finished in third place, while John Webster of North Platte was the last driver to finish the race.

The IMCA Stock Car A Feature had several surprises for everyone. Charley Brown of Maxwell, another double duty driver, took the lead on the opening lap of the race. Mikey Dancer of North Platte, who spent ample time after his honeymoon working on his racecar, appeared to be ready to pay off for that hard work as he took the lead from Brown on lap six. He maintained the top spot until Todd Chrisman finished working his way from row six and worked his way by Dancer on lap eleven. Dancer’s car gave up the ghost with four laps to go, handing second over to Justin Bussell of Imperial, who also started on row six. Bussell came charging, but Chrisman was determined to drive on for his fourth track win in five tries this season. A bunch of drivers that needed good finishes had them, including third place Kent Lower, fourth place Kerry Jones, and fifth place Adam Kackmeister, all of North Platte. Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood joined Chrisman and Dancer as IMCA Stock Car heat race winners that night.

Shane Klockman opened the IMCA Hobby Stock main event with the lead. The race slowed after Tyler Blake of North Platte played pinball, bouncing his car off of the stopped car of Joe Thiem, also of North Platte, and into Wray, Colo. driver John Groshans. After that mess was cleaned up, Austin Davis of Benkelman began working on fellow heat race winner Klockman for the lead. Klockman spun while leading on lap eight and handed the lead over to Davis. Fortunately for him, Eric Piquet of North Platte spun in a separate incident, bringing out the caution before another lap was completed. Klockman learned from his mistake and kept his car straight while leading. He held on for his first IMCA Hobby Stock win of the year. Davis finished in second place, ahead of Miles White of North Platte, Derek Thiem of Columbus, and Michael Brunswig of Benkelman.

Lincoln County Raceway will be back in action on Saturday, July 14. The gates open at 5 p. m., and the races will start at 7 p. m., Central Time. The Late Models will join the five regular classes that night.

McCook Speedway results, June 30

by Darin Racek - 7/1/2007

McCook Speedway raced on June 30, the second Saturday night race in two weeks. Although that seemed strange, as McCook Speedway runs mainly on Friday nights, it was appropriate, as June 30 had a blue moon, the second full moon of the month. Robby Haines and Michael Brunswig of Benkelman, Zach Schultz of North Platte, Max Pollmann of Trenton, and Cindy Murray of Oberlin, Kan., were not blue at the end of the night, as they all had picked up A Feature wins during the night.

Near the end of the IMCA Modified A Feature, it seemed like déjà vu, as Robby Haines was leading, and David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan. was in second place when they caught slower traffic. Murray’s path to the spot was not easy, as at one time, he was in the middle of a five-car battle for second place that included himself, fellow heat winner Brandon Hagan of Culbertson, Jay Steffens of North Platte, John Fabrizius of Colby, Kan., and Kyle Clough of Wallace. Once Murray got through, he tracked down Haines and caught him as Haines was catching the traffic with a few laps to go. On the last lap, Haines was able to get by the slow car after it moved up the track, which set a mini-pick, forcing Murray to whoa up a bit, and allowing Haines to drive off for the win. Steffens finished in third place, ahead of Hagan and Fabrizius.

The IMCA Stock Cars didn’t disappoint the fans looking for excitement. On the third lap of the race, Bob Chalupa of McCook spun, and several cars behind him spun and crashed, resulting in a six-car melee, low-lighted by the car of Larry Pollmann of McCook on top of the car of Lloyd Meeske of Champion. Both continued the race, but Meeske was out within two laps of green. Heat winner Zach Schultz had the lead at the start and had a big lead before a car spun on lap 10, bringing out the caution. That aided John Huffman of McCook, who had started in the sixth row and had moved into second place before the race slowed. On the restart, Huffman pressured Schultz, and took the lead from him with less than two laps to go. On the last lap, Schultz was able to get his car back under Huffman’s, regain the lead, and hold John off for the win. Shane Stout of North Platte was right behind them in third place, and ahead of Ritchie Wickizer of Culbertson and Brandon Anderson of McCook. Huffman and Jason Davis of Norton, Kan., were the other heat winners.

Michael Brunswig has been running fast of late, but unable to cash in on an A Feature win in the IMCA Hobby Stock class. He ran well in his heat race until his car slowed down after losing his power steering and water pump. In the feature, however, he grabbed the lead on the opening lap and stayed out front to finally win his first ever A Feature, on a blue moon night no less. Austin Davis kept the Benkelman cars in the top two, as he finished in second place. Shane Klockman of Ogallala took home third place, ahead of North Platte’s Eric Picquet and Maxwell’s Corey Cruzan. Richard Boon of Benkelman was the winner of the IMCA Hobby Stock heat race.

Max Pollmann learned the definition of adversity in the Classic Modified A Feature. He was involved in a five car incident on the second lap that had the disabled car of Donny Sailors of McCook tangled in with his. Once the cars were separated, Pollmann drove to the pits and had a tire changed. He came out in time to line up in the back. Heat winner Devin Allen of Culbertson was in the lead at that time, and kept doing everything he was doing to keep himself out front. However, Pollmann found a better line, and with two laps to go, made the winning pass on Allen. Devin held onto second place. Rick Touslee of Oberlin, Kan. Took home third place. The top five were rounded out by Matt Matson of McCook and Loren Pollmann of Trenton.

The Mini Truck A Feature had a good battle up front early on, as heat race winner Zach Olmstead of Overton was trying to hold off his cousin Cindy Murray and Alex Silos of North Platte. Murray took the lead on lap four, and the other two tangled soon after. Silos held onto his second place, while Olmstead lost many spots. Silos regrouped and gained ground on Murray a couple of times, but was unable to deny her the win. Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kan., took home third place. Jake Sahm of McCook was fourth, and Delbert Ridenour of Culbertson finished in fifth.

There is considerable racing this week in Southwest Nebraska. On Tuesday night, July 3, Culbertson Speedway will have a show. McCook Speedway will be back in action on Friday night, July 6. Both tracks will have an 8 PM CDT start on the nights they run.

Tell North Platte what you think

by Darin Racek - 6/24/2007

“Thunder On The Plains” concluded on June 23 at McCook Speedway, and the fans were treated with some good racing and wild action. John Fabrizius of Colby, Kan., Zach Schultz and Alex Silos of North Platte, Kyle Bond of Kearney, and Loren Pollmann of Trenton were the best racers who stayed out of the wild action for the night, and took the five A Feature victories.

The start of the IMCA Modified A Feature was delayed for nearly 20 minutes after a switch to one of the light poles was tripped, leaving corner one in the dark. That gave the Modified drivers 20 more minutes to sit there and get more anxious for the race. When it was time to race, it took five tries to get one lap in. The worst incident was when Troy Douglas of Hershey launched his car up and over corner one after trying to avoid a car that had checked up. Douglas’s car rolled after hitting the ground. Fortunately, he was not hurt. When the race got going, cash dash winner Robby Haines of Benkelman found his way to the lead and tried to pull away. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan. worked his way up to second and eventually caught Haines. The two had pulled away from the field when they caught up to a slower car. Haines got into the back of the slower car, checked up, and Murray ran into the back of him, resulting in the Haines machine going for a ride. The two were put to the back. Both showed their displeasure towards the driver of the slower car in a negative manner, and were disqualified for the night. Bryan Hagan of Culbertson inherited the lead, but only briefly, as John Fabrizius had his car set up right, took the lead from him, and zoomed away with the victory. Jay Steffens of North Platte made a late run to get by Hagan for second place. Bryan held on for his best Modified finish, third, ahead of Jeremy Frenier of Fort Collins, Colo., and Brandon Hagan of Culbertson. Don Hagan, Jr. of Culbertson, Murray, and Haines were the three heat race winners.

As rough as the IMCA Stock Car A Feature was the night before, the field of eighteen ran a very clean 20-lap event, slowed by only one caution. Zach Schultz took the lead from fellow North Platte driver Shane Stout on lap three. Schultz stayed out front for the entire race. Brady Koch of Cambridge got by Stout for second place. John Huffman of McCook started back in row five, but worked his way up to fourth place at the finish, ahead of fellow hometown driver Larry Pollmann. Schultz, Earl Woodward of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Bob Chalupa of McCook won the heat races. Chalupa also took the money in the cash dash win. The three IMCA classes had cash dashes, sponsored by Holiday Inn Express.

The weekend was tough on the IMCA Hobby Stocks, and mechanical issues on some of the cars prevented some of the drivers from making it to the A Feature. The ones that did put on a good race. Rookie Corey Cruzan of Maxwell took the early lead in the race, but the heat race winner was soon passed by Benkelman driver Michael Brunswig. Cash dash winner Kyle Bond worked his way from row four to second place, and with less than two laps to go, made his winning move on Brunswig. Benkelman drivers Austin Davis and Cody DeWester finished in third and fourth, while Ogallala driver Shane Klockman took home fifth place. Jason Koch of Cambridge was the other heat race winner.

For the first time this year, there were enough Classic Modifieds to run two heat races at McCook Speedway, with those being won by Max Pollmann of Trenton and Donny Sailors of McCook. After a restart, Loren Pollmann grabbed the lead, followed closely by Sailors. Max Pollmann had worked his way to third place and had hopes of winning his fifth straight main event at McCook when he spun out. He had to go to the back of the field, but did manage to get back to fifth place at the finish. His dad Loren spun as well, but it was not until after he went across the finish line ahead of the field, taking his first win in nearly two years. Sailors finished in second place, in spite of a good battle with Devin Allen of Culbertson. Allen took third place, with Jay Alberts of McCook finishing in fourth place.

The Mini Trucks were having a wild time all night. Sara Murray of Oberlin, Kan., won a wild heat race. The feature race was dotted with over a half dozen spins, and one truck sailing off of corner two. Alex Silos was doing his own sailing, as he got out front early and steered away from the rough waters behind him. Mike Schrader of Benkelman finished in second place. Jacob Olmstead of Overton came back from a trip off the track to finish in third place. Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kan., came back to McCook despite rolling the night before and finished in fourth place. Delbert Ridenour of Culbertson took fifth place.

The drivers and crew of McCook Speedway will get a week to rest after the weekend, then will come back on Saturday night, June 30 to do it all again. With it being a Saturday night race, the gates will open at 5 p.m. CDT, and the races will start at 7.

McCook Speedway results, June 22

June 22 was the opening night for “Thunder On The Plains,” and the sky rumbled before the races with actual thunder. The storms stayed to the south and east of McCook, and the entire show went on as scheduled. David Murray, Jr. and Cindy Murray of Oberlin, Kan., Todd Chrisman of North Platte, Jason Koch of Cambridge, and Max Pollmann of Trenton seemed to be on schedule as well, getting their cars and names back into victory lane.

For the first six laps of the IMCA Modified A Feature, the field remained close to heat winner Brandon Hagan of Culbertson, much in part to four caution periods. David Murray, also a heat race winner, had worked his way from ninth to second place in those six laps, and restarted on Hagan’s rear bumper. On the start, Murray was able to get underneath the Culbertson driver and move to the head of the field. He would race unabated to the finish line, and earn his third win at McCook Speedway this year, his eighteenth for 2007. Behind Hagan was a good race for third place, as Todd Hartley of Maywood was driving the race of his life, using the high line in hopes of earning a top four finish.. When the top went away, Hartley did as well, giving up spots to several drivers, including Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kan., Robby Haines of Benkelman (who had to come from sixteenth place on lap six to get there), John Fabrizius of Colby, Kan. and Jay Schilling of McCook. Don Hagan, Jr. of Culbertson was the other heat race winner for the IMCA Modifieds.

The IMCA Stock Car A Feature had a rough time getting started, as the field chalked up three caution periods before they got two laps in. The big one happened when the second place car went for a spin in front of a tight field, setting up a series of spins and full speed collisions. Five drivers ended their night of racing and began a night of working on their cars after that one. The more surprising occurrence was, there were no more caution periods in the twenty lap race. Brady Koch of Cambridge got by Fort Morgan, Colo. driver Jesse Taylor for the lead on the second lap, and appeared to have the race under control. While he had the front covered, Todd Chrisman working his way from the field from his seventh row starting spot. Chrisman had moved to third place as the race was getting into the second half and was thinking he might have a chance at Taylor. That was when one of Koch’s rear tires went flat. As he slowed, Taylor and Chrisman gained great ground on him. Taylor tried to go by him on the high side, just as Koch made a move to go high to try to get out of the way. Chrisman saw the situation, went low, got by both of them, and took his second track win of the year. Taylor ended up with other competition as well, including Jason Davis of Norton, Kan., and Casey Werkmeister of Maywood. Davis got by the Colorado driver first, but Werkmeister got by best, sneaking by Davis on the last lap to take second place. Larry Pollmann of McCook took home fifth place money. Koch, Zach Schultz of North Platte, and Ritchie Wickizer of Culbertson were the IMCA Stock Car heat race winners.

Leland Stute of Benkelman paced the early portion of the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature until fellow hometown driver Michael Brunswig zoomed by to take command. After Brunswig used the high line to get by Stute, he changed his mind and started working the bottom of the track. That opened the door for Jason Koch, who figured out the high side was the right side for his car. With three laps to go, Koch got by and got himself into McCook’s victory interviews for the first time this season. Brunswig finished in second place, followed by Shane Klockman of Ogallala, Kyle Bond of Kearney, and Stute. The #20 cars of Hunter Cantrall of Lexington and Cody DeWester of Benkelman won the heat races. All eight IMCA heat race winners were paid $50 for their wins, sponsored by Car Quest Auto Parts of McCook.

Max Pollmann won his fourth consecutive Classic Modified A Feature at McCook Speedway, but it wasn’t as easy as the first part of this sentence sounds. McCook driver Matt Matson ran well early in the night, taking both the heat race and cash dash wins, then pacing much of the first part of the main event. While he showed the way, Pollmann and Devin Allen of Culbertson battled behind him for second place. At one point, it appeared Allen had second wrapped up and was on his way to challenge Matson, but Pollmann found a new line that worked for his P82 machine, and he cleared both with four laps to go. Matson finished in second place. Third place at the finish line was so close, the scorekeepers were split on who earned it. Fortunately for Jay Alberts, there are an odd number of scorekeepers, and two of the three thought he had a slight advantage on Allen. Donny Sailors of McCook finished in fifth place.

Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kan. gave the crowd a scare on the opening lap of the Mini-Truck A Feature when he rolled his vehicle three times in corner one. Fortunately, he walked away. Cindy Murray took the lead when racing resumed, and for a while, seemed like she would have a unchallenged time of doing so. However, heat race victor Royal Fisher of Oberlin, Kan. found his way through the field and took the lead on lap six. Murray regrouped after that happened, and on the last lap, made the pass that would get her her first win of the year at McCook Speedway. Fisher was followed at the line by Alex Silos of North Platte, Delbert Ridenour of Culbertson, and Robin Runge of Palisade.

Racing resumes tonight at McCook Speedway at 7 PM, Central Time. The IMCA Stock Cars will race for $500 to win, and the IMCA Hobby Stocks will race for $250 to win.

The track crew at McCook Speedway worked on the holes that were plaguing the track in previous races for the June 8 show. The track was smooth, but it became dry slick, and the drivers had to adjust their styles. David Murray, Jr. and Royal Fisher of Oberlin, Kan., Jason Davis of Norton, Kan., Justin Wagner of Culbertson, and Max Pollmann of Trenton made the best adjustments to their cars and styled their way to A Feature victories.

It was a special night for the IMCA Modifieds, as extra money was added to give the winner of the A Feature $500 to win. The field was aligned by the draw, with Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kansas on the pole and Chad Dolan of Gibbon on the outside of the front row. Tubbs took the lead on the start, but lost it to Dolan, who used the outside line to get by him on lap three. Dolan tried to stretch out a lead, but a couple of cautions in the next few laps kept the field close. Heat race winners Jay Steffens of North Platte and David Murray found their way to second place and began to do battle. Once Murray was clear, he tracked down Dolan, who was still using a higher line. Murray stuck his car to the bottom, and on lap 14, made the final lead pass for the night. Steffens, who also won the $100 Cash Dash, caught Dolan in the waning laps and moved into second place with one lap to go, but Dolan got back by on the last lap for an exciting second-place finish. Following Steffens was John Fabrizius of Colby, Kansas and Robby Haines of Benkelman. The other IMCA Modified heat winner was Brandon Hagan of Culbertson.

If there is a word that closely describes the IMCA Stock Car A Feature, “pandemonium” would be it. Four times, the caution flag waved in the first two laps. Heat winner Ritchie Wickizer of Culbertson inherited the lead after previous leader Brandon Anderson of McCook looped his car. Wickizer maintained the lead until a lap nine restart found him starting with a flat tire. By the time he got to the pits, he had two flats. Rookie Larry Pollmann of McCook inherited the lead, challenged by Jason Davis and North Platte driver Todd Chrisman. With a handful of laps to go, Pollmann spun, handing Davis the lead. He held his line, and held off Chrisman for his first McCook Speedway feature win of the year. Dave Plowman of Gretna started in the back, stayed out of all of the trouble, and went home with a clean race car and a third place finish. Caleb Peters of Oberlin, Kansas and Lloyd Meeske of Champion rounded out the top five. Zach Schultz of North Platte and John Huffman of McCook earned the other two Stock Car heat race victories.

John’s dad Jim Huffman got the lead on the opening lap of the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature. As in the Stock Car Feature, cautions kept the field close. Justin Wagner, a victim of an early race caution, used the cautions and the dry slick track to his advantage and worked his way back through the field. With three laps to go, Wagner found the way by Jim Huffman and took off with the win. Huffman held onto second place. The battle for third was exciting at the end, and heat race winner Austin Davis of Benkelman just nipped Ogallala’s Shane Klockman at the line for the spot. Jason Koch of Cambridge rounded out the top five. Michael Brunswig of Benkelman was the winner of the other IMCA Hobby Stock Heat race.

Max Pollmann wasted no time in the caution-free Classic Modified main event. The heat race victor started in row two and had made his final pass by corner three of the opening lap. Devin Allen of Culbertson started a little bit further back an had to work hard to find his way to second place. Fellow Culbertson driver Mike Brenning made a late pass on McCook’s Donny Sailors to finish in third. Loren Pollmann of Trenton was the last driver to get his car into the top five.

After an opening lap tangle, the Mini-Trucks ran all 10 laps without another wave of the yellow flag. Royal Fisher showed he had the fastest truck for the night, taking first the heat race win, then getting his second win of the night when it counted financially, the A Feature. Alex Silos of North Platte started in the back of the field after the opening lap trouble, drove to second place, and did give Royal a scare. However, a bobble in corner two with two laps to go was enough to get him out of contention for the win, but not enough to knock him from second place. Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kansas found his way to third place come the end of the race. Delbert Ridenour of Culbertson finished in fourth, and Mike Schrader of Benkelman, in his first night out, rounded out the top five. All starters in the Mini-Truck A Feature finished, and on the lead lap.

The next race in Southwest Nebraska will be at Culbertson Speedway on Friday, June 15, beginning at 8 p.m. CDT. The next event at McCook Speedway will be “Thunder On The Plains” on June 22 and 23. On Friday night, all five classes will run, with extra money in the purse of the Mini-Trucks and Classic Modifieds. The races will start at 8 p.m. June 23 will have a complete show as well beginning at 7 p.m. The IMCA Stock Cars will be running for $500 to win the A Feature. The three IMCA classes will run Cash Dashes, and all heat race winners for the night will receive $50.

Lincoln Co Raceway results, June 9

An incredible amount of cars showed up at Lincoln County Raceway as the Blood, Sweat, and Tears IMCA Modifieds came to North Platte to do battle with the locals on June 9, but there were more cars in all four classes. Drivers in the pits came from Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, North Dakota, and Canada. David Murray of Oberlin, Kansas, Todd Chrisman of North Platte, Derek Theim of Columbus, and John Webster overcame the numbers and took home the A Feature victories.

When it was time to get racing, 36 IMCA Modified drivers had signed in for the night’s events. The Modifieds drew for positions for four heat races, with the top three in each heat qualifying for the A Feature, and the remainder of the field filling two B Features, of which six cars from each were added to build a field of 24 for the A. Ronnie Wallace of North Platte rocked the house by being the first local to win the first Modified heat of the night. The second-place car failed to scale after the heat, and was relegated to the B Feature. Although they are the top two drives in BST points, David Murray and Fort Morgan, Colo., driver Jeremy Frenier had made it to the two previous races in North Platte, and they took the wins for heats two and three. Jim Mlady of North Platte took the fourth heat win, but a yellow flag on the last lap forced the scorekeepers to score the rest of the field on how the last completed lap aligned, minus the cars involved in the yellow. Last week’s A Feature winner, Robby Haines of Benkelman, won a wild first B Feature. Brendon Labatte of Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada, earned the second B Feature win for the Great White North.

Ronnie Wallace and Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte drew the front row for the 25-lap A Feature. Three cautions on during the first nine laps kept the field close. The BST side-by-side restarts where everyone second place on back started side-by-side kept the field even closer. David Murray was one of the drivers who was enjoying the restarts, moving forward from his sixth-row starting spot. After the lap nine caution, Wallace seemed to maintain a good lead over then second place Murray. Unfortunately, another caution four laps later again put Murray on his tail. After the restart, the two leaders got together in corner three. Wallace pushed up the track, Murray held his low line, and took control of the race. Wallace couldn’t troll him in, and Murray went on to take the IMCA Modified Feature win. As he runs for both BST and Lincoln County Raceway, it was a draw as to which series had the to call the winner his own. Wallace and Dillenburg did the hometown crowd proud by finishing in second and third places. Chad Dolan of Gibbon, in his first race at the track this year, finished in fourth place, while Brandon Hagan of Culbertson finished ahead of Jeremy Frenier for fifth place.

When the officials started 23 IMCA Stock Cars in their A Feature, people wondered what was wrong with the officials for doing so. The field of drivers impressed and amazed the fans, running the 20-lap race with only two cautions, one of those for a car the flagmen felt was not far enough into the infield. While good racing could be found throughout the field, McCook driver John Huffman was showing the way around the 3/8-mile track. Todd Chrisman started in the fifth row and was working his way through the field when the caution flag waved for the stalled car. At that time, he found himself in third, but within two laps, Chrisman found his way to the front and held on for his third straight win. The rookie Huffman held onto second place. Sixth row starter Shawn Bigham of Imperial found his way to third place at the finish, and had his shocks claimed by Adam Kackmeister. He accepted the claim. North Platte drivers Mikey Dancer and Zach Schultz finished in fourth and fifth places. Schultz, Chrisman, and Shane Stout won the IMCA Stock Car heat races.

Everyone knew there was an extra $250 for the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature, courtesy of NAPA, and the drivers raced liked it was for ten times that amount. A pileup on the opening lap reset the field with Shane Klockman of Ogallala and NAPA Cash Dash winner Austin Davis on the front row. Davis garnered the lead for a while, until heat winner Derek Thiem was work from his fourth row starting position to challenge for the lead. Theim took control on lap five. Despite several more extra curricular cautions, the theme for the remaining ten laps was Joe Theim leading. Austin Davis finished in second place. Despite a spin with six laps to go, Klockman came back to take third spot, with Eric Picquet finishing fourth, and fellow Platter Rick Eller made a late charge to finish in the top five.

John Webster enjoyed a caution-free Mini Sprint A Feature. The heat winner sat on the pole and drove off for a healthy lead. Previous A Feature winners Josh Sabin and Jeremy Herbst of North Platte were hot on his tail, and challenging each other for second spot. They had caught Webster with the laps to go, but they tangled long enough for Webster to get away and finish first. Sabin was able to finish in second place, with Herbst right behind him. Arden Myers of McCook and Bob Swedeen of Alliance rounded out the top five.

With only a few days to prepare, the Lincoln County Raceway crew gears up for the “Run For The Money” show on Tuesday, June 12, starting at 7 p.m. CDT. Based on 25 cars, the IMCA Modifieds will run for $1,000, the IMCA Stock Cars $800, and the IMCA Hobby Stocks $250. The BST Modifieds plan to be in the area to keep the Modified number high, and with other tracks in Nebraska and Kansas having the night off, there should be many more cars in all three classes. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $6 for children 6 - 12, and free for children under 6.

Lincoln Co Raceway results, June 2

Because of the cloudy week, everyone forgot there was nearly a full moon for June 2 at Lincoln County Raceway, but the drivers reminded the crowd with some crazy happenings. At the end of the night, Robby Haines of Benkelman, Todd Chrisman and Josh Sabin of North Platte, Aaron Koch of Cambridge, and Travis Bayne of Windsor, Colo. were the drivers beaming brightly, as they took the A Feature wins.

An incredible 26 IMCA Modifieds filled the pits, and it took four heat races and a B Feature to set up the eighteen car field A Feature. The eighteen drivers that made the A Main impressed and pleased the fans by driving 20 laps without a caution period. Robby Haines had won a heat race and the cash dash for the night, but felt like he might have used up his luck before the A Feature. However, the car was set up perfectly, and Haines hit his spots to pull away for the win and the sweep. Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte had to work hard to get by fellow hometown driver Dan Carl for second place, but once he got here, he was unchallenged. Jay Steffens of North Platte was near the top five the entire night and finished in third place. With the field so spread out, the next few drivers had no idea where they finished. However, Maxwell’s Charley Brown finished in fourth, Brandon Hagan of Culbertson fifth, and Dave Pedersen of Brady took home sixth place. Brandon’s father Don Hagan, Jr. was the B Feature winner. Besides Haines, David Murray of Oberlin, Kan., Dan Carl, and Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg were the other heat race winners.

The Colorado Mod Lites of Eastern Colorado and the Outlaw Vintage Lite Series of Eastern Nebraska went head-to-head June 2 at Lincoln County Raceway. It came down to two Colorado drivers and former North Platte residents at the end. Tracy Bayne of Fort Collins, Colo., paced the race from the third lap to nearly the end, when his brother Travis Bayne of Windsor, Colo. drove his Mini Mod underneath him in corner two and stole the win. Cousin Brad Bayne of Nunn, Colo., was three-wheeling his way for much of the race up the third place spot at the finish. Roger Hornby finished a top four sweep of the finishing spots by Colorado Lite drivers. Chick DeMoss of Lincoln was the best Outlaw Vintage Lite finisher with his fifth-place finish. DeMoss and Tracy and Travis Bayne were also the winners of the heat races.

Todd Chrisman won his second consecutive IMCA Stock Car A Feature, but it wasn’t easy. Fellow heat race winner Mikey Dancer of North Platte had his car set up well, and he enjoyed the lead up to the first caution. Brandon Clough lost the rear end out of his car after clipping the stopped car of Dan Eller. After a lengthy cleanup, Chrisman stepped up to challenge Dancer, and on lap nine, found a way around. Dancer had the lead again on lap 10, only to give it back on lap 11. That was when the Chrisman and his number 11 decided it was time to share the lead no more. Shane Stout’s third-place finish meant the three heat winners swept the top three spot, and Zach Schultz’s fourth-place finish meant a sweep of those spots by North Platte drivers. Colton Osborn of Cozad finished in fifth place.

The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature started off with a crash, as Eric Picquet of North Platte rolled his car one time after completing one lap. The red flag came out as the rescue teams hurried over to the car, but by the time they got there, Picquet had driven away. He even managed to bring the car back out on the track after his crew worked on it and finished only one lap down. Shane Klockman of Ogallala paced the early part of the race and appeared to be on the way for the win. That was before Derek Thiem of Columbus and Aaron Koch of Cambridge caught him and turned up the heat. Unfortunately for Shane, he spun his car out halfway through the race, and was collected by Austin Davis of Benkelman. Thiem inherited the lead briefly. Aaron Koch passed him on the opening lap and survived three more caution periods to stay out front for the win. Thiem finished in second place, ahead of heat winner Michael Woodhead of Holyoke, Colo. John Groshans of Wray, Colo. earned fourth spot, while newcomer Ethan Johnson of Broken Bow finished in fifth place. Klockman was the other IMCA Hobby Stock heat winner.

Josh Sabin broke though with the heat race and A Feature win in the Mini-Sprint class. His drive to victory broke a string of six straight feature wins by Jeremy Herbst of North Platte, who finished in second place. J. R. Way of Lexington held off double-duty Jamey Kennicutt for third place. Arden Myers rounded out the top five.

Lincoln County Raceway will be back in action next week, June 9. The IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Hobby Stocks, and Mini-Sprints will be back. There will be a $250 bonus for the winner of the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature, courtesy of NAPA. The gates open at 5 p.m. CDT, and the races will start at 7.

Lincoln County Raceway results, May 12

by Darin Racek - 5/14/2007

May 12 was opening night at Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte. The pits were full of cars, and the grandstands were full of people ready for the Saturday night thunder made by the cars on the track. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., Todd Chrisman and Jeremy Herbst of North Platte, Derek Thiem of Columbus, and Tony Gregg of Hastings had the lightning to go with the thunder, as they took home the five A Feature wins. David Murray, Jr. started on the pole of the IMCA Modified A Feature and led all twenty laps for the opening night win. Fellow heat race winner Ronnie Wallace of North Platte took home second place. The battle behind was good all night, first with Don Hagan, Jr. of Culbertson battling with Mike Saathoff of North Platte for third place. After Hagan found his groove, he drove away for third. Saathoff then battled Charley Brown of Maxwell and heat winner Jim Mlady of North Platte, and the three ran in a group for five laps. Near the end of the race, Mlady cleared himself of the other two to earn the fourth spot, and Eddie Edwards of McCook snuck by the other two to take home fifth place. Dave Pedersen of Brady was the B Feature winner, and Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte was the other heat winner.

Todd Chrisman had the broom out, as he swept his heat race, the cash dash, and the IMCA Stock Car A Feature. Heat winner Shane Stout of North Platte had the initial lead, but lost it to fellow hometown driver Zach Schultz. Despite Chrisman getting by him on lap eight, Schultz stayed right him, and challenged him to the end. Lloyd Meeske of Champion, John Huffman of McCook, and Travis Tilford of North Platte rounded out the top five. Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood was declared the B Feature. Mikey Dancer of North Platte and rookie Colton Osborn of Cozad were the other heat race winners.

The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature went the entire distance without a caution, the only of the IMCA sanctioned features to do so. Derek Thiem took the lead during the first lapped, but was challenged by fellow heat race winner Shane Klockman of Ogallala. Klockman spun in corner two while trying to make a move, and that dropped him out of contention. Michael Brunswig of Benkelman began reeling Thiem in, but the Columbus driver was too big of a fish to reel in on this particular night. A couple of Colorado drivers finished in the top five, as Ron Edge of Amherst and Jim Moore of Longmont took home third and fourth. Greg Lower, driving his son and last year’s Hobby Stock champion Thomas Lower’s car, finished in fifth.

After troubles in the Mini Sprint heat race, Jeremy Herbst had his crew went to work on his car for the A Feature. They fixed it good, and it went the twenty laps in the Mini Sprint A Feature at the front without problems. Heat race winner Arden Myers of McCook finished in second place. Josh Sabin of North Platte made a late run to sneak home in third place. Toph Harmon of Holbrook and Trent Hansen of North Platte rounded out the top five.

The Super Late Models were invited to run May 12, to give them an opportunity to try the track for the June 29 special, and to give the fans a show. They tried to put on the show too hard opening lap in the heat race after former North Platte residents Kenny McCarty, now of Rogers, Ark., and Steve Kempt of Shelton connected on the front stretch. Kempt spun, but kept his foot in it and got it righted. McCarty, unfortunately, hit the wall and was there for a ride as it skidded along the top of the wall on the front stretch. He was not injured. Heat race winner and former NCRA champion Tony Gregg of Hastings repeated his performance in the A Feature, taking the win. Shane Lewis of North Platte took home second place in the feature, after Kempt spun in the waning laps. Kempt was able to get his car righted to finish in third. Ron Lee of Valentine took the fourth spot, and Charley Brown, driving for Gary Long of Valentine, finished in fifth place.

After taking a week off for graduation, Lincoln County Raceway will be back in action on Saturday, May 26, with a Sprint Car Special. The American Sprint Car Association Rocky Mountain 360 Sprint Cars and National Championship Racing Association 360 Sprints will square off, beginning at 7 p.m., CDT. The Mini Sprints will be the support class.
